The Clams formed in 2013 when asked to reunite for a Savannah GA wedding party. They were called the clams at the oyster roast, and the name stuck. Various members of The Clams have been playing together since their Greenwich High days in the late '70s and early '80s. The band plays select private parties, club gigs and major Greenwich events such as the 2017 Greenwich Town Party, the 2017 The Last Taste of Summer Craft Beer Festival and the 2018 Putnam Indian Field School Annual Fund Raiser.
The lineup features a solid group of accomplished local musicians. Guitarist/composer Chris "the guy" Schriener, whose playing style has been described as "spacey, quietly flashy and intense" by The Wall Street Journal, unites with guitarist Oliver Nisenson to form powerful rhythms and alternating leads. Drummer Jason Pharr has played on Broadway and in Olympic stadiums over the years. His alter ego is Jay of the local family music duo Jay and Ray. Bluesy lead vocalist, Melissa Nisenson, formerly of You, Us and the Doc and Apology Accepted, harmonizes with singer Ani Sandoval to round out the band with founding members Scott Chard on percussion and Ward Davis on bass.
The band is rooted in classic rock, Motown funk, grunge and contemporary rock. The Clams play originally arranged covers of their favorite music by The Allman Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Talking Heads, The Grateful Dead, The Black Keys, Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Led Zeppelin and many more.
